Dear Church Family,

Eccl 3:1 says, “To every thing there is a season , and a time to every purpose under the heaven.”  I read that scripture to say that the Lord has led Brenda and me to a new season in our lives.  That season is retirement.

For 37 years I have had the joy of serving the Kingdom of God as a pastor.  I have been overwhelmingly blessed by the people of God.  I have seen the mighty hand of God at work many, many times.  We serve a good God.  I am deeply humbled that He would include me in kingdom work.

The decision to retire has come as a result of health concerns that I and my family have for me.  I have had significant health issues surface, especially since 2009 when I had a heart attack.  Many of you are aware of this.   Now, just hold on a minute!  Please, please understand that I’m not terminal.  Let’s not  get rumors started!  That said, it is in the very best interests of my family and myself to make this decision.

Brenda and I look forward to staying in Round Rock and in our present home.  And we look forward to continuing the relationships that we have made over the years with you as friends.

Furthermore, we believe that First Baptist Church is entering a new season as well.  The opportunity this church has in one of the fastest growing communities in America is great.  I am confident that God is already raising up a pastor who is praying about his own season of life and sensing God leading him forward.  Any pastor would feel blessed and eager to serve a church such as this one.

I promise my continued friendship with First Baptist Church.  I will be praying for you and asking God to lead you forward in a mighty way.   I will rejoice in the victories God will grant you.  Brenda and I will definitely be present at the significant times of celebration that are ahead for you.   And there will be many in the days to come!  If there is ever a way I can be of service to you, I would count it an honor.  I promise my prayer support for your new pastor.  I look forward to his friendship, whoever he may be.

Please know that this has not been an easy decision to make.  The reason that is true is that you are such a loving and caring church.  You have been so good to us as I know you will be to your next senior pastor.

Our plans are to continue to serve here until the last day of February, 2014.  It will be a sweet time for all of us and probably a few tears along the way.  But they will be tears of joy.

I’ll have more to say to you in the weeks ahead.  But for now, we have work to do.

Thank you for loving us as you have.  We truly leave here in full fellowship with all of you.  You will always be in our hearts.

Don’t ever forget – the best is yet to come.

 Gary and Brenda
